The Arctic Monkeys are a band that need little introduction, they were perhaps the first great band of the internet age.
Initially, the band received great exposure through online platforms such as Myspace and eventually became one of the most hyped bands in the United Kingdom with their 2006 debut album Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not becoming the fastest debut album in UK history selling overcopies in its first week.
With instant classics such as I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor and When the Sun Goes Down, Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not remains a modern classic and, for many, one of the greatest albums of all time.
The songs on the album deal with typical teenage life in the UK and were immensely relatable for many and resulted with the band becoming the band of a generation.
This week’s song is Mardy Bum, one of the most popular and beloved songs from Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not. This singalong classic details an argument between the singer and his girlfriend.
For some, this may be quite a challenging song to understand as it is sung in their native Sheffield dialect.
Nevertheless, I selected this song as I think it is a good idea to allow yourselves to be exposed to as many different English accents and dialects as possible, there is also a lot of really interesting slang used in this song. Below I have included a link to the song along with the lyrics.
Mardy Bum: Yorkshire slang for somebody who is in a bad mood, Unco-operative or ‘sulky’
Cuddle: Synonymous with ‘Hug.’
Got The Face On: Somebody who looks or seems upset/angry.
I Can’t be Arsed: I can’t be bothered, I don’t want to do it.
Right Hard: Yorkshire slang for ‘Very Hard’
Pulling that Silent Disappointment Face: Making that Silent Disappointment Face

Now then Mardy BumI see your frownAnd it’s like looking down the barrel of a gunAnd it goes offAnd out come all these wordsOh there’s a very pleasant side to youA side I much preferIt’s one that laughs and jokes aroundRemember cuddles in the kitchenYeah, to get things off the groundAnd it was up, up and awayOh, but it’s right hard to rememberThat on a day like today when you’re all argumentativeAnd you’ve got the face on
Well now then Mardy BumOh I’m in trouble again, aren’t II thought as muchCause you turned over therePulling that silent disappointment faceThe one that I can’t bare
Can’t we laugh and joke aroundRemember cuddles in the kitchenYeah, to get things off the groundAnd it was up, up and awayOh, but it’s right hard to rememberThat on a day like today when you’re all argumentativeAnd you’ve got the face on
Yeah I’m sorry I was lateWell I missed the trainAnd then the traffic was a stateAnd I can’t be arsed to carry on in this debateThat reoccurs ,oh when you say I don’t careWell of course I do, yeah I clearly do!
So laugh and joke aroundRemember cuddles in the kitchenYeah, to get things off the groundAnd it was up, up and awayStill it’s right hard to rememberThat on a day like today when you’re all argumentativeAnd you’ve got the face on
